At the 2002 Blade Show, A. G. Russell Knives of Lowell, Arkansas received the Imported Knife of the Year award for the A. G. Russell Gentleman's Folder. The knife was designed by A. G. Russell himself and was manufactured by H.P. Klotzli of Switzerland.
The Blade Show is held in Atlanta annually and is attended by knife manufacturers, handmade knifemakers, dealers, collectors and buyers from around the world. The show is sponsored each year by Blade Magazine, the strongest voice in the knife industry. The coveted awards are very competitive and almost all knife manufacturers participate in the competition, including such American companies as Schrade, SOG, Benchmade, Buck, and Gerber, Boker from Germany and Seki Cut of Japan.
A. G. Russell's winning design is a Gentleman's Pocketknife, which measures 5-7/8" open and weighs 1.5 oz. With a blade of ATS-34 stainless and carbon fiber handle scales.
A. G. Russell is credited with being a major force behind the growth of the handmade knife industry beginning in the mid-1960s, when Russell, who was then selling sharpening stones from his kitchen table, convinced then-editor of Gun Digest, John Amber, to begin writing about knives. As a pioneer in the knife industry, Russell began the first knife mail order catalogue, was the first to set up a collaboration between a handmade knifemaker and knife manufacturer, founded the Knife Collectors Club, and co-founded the Knifemaker Guild in 1970 (of which he is still honorary President).
Today, A. G. Russell Knives is a leader in the industry, known for quality, value oriented knives. The booming business consists of a retail outlet, mail order catalogue for A. G. Russell Knives and Russells For Men, as well as a strong internet business. The business is guaranteed by A. G. Russell himself, and the mail-order call center is staffed with knowledgeable staff, who are glad to answer questions.
Due to recent growth, A. G. Russell Knives has relocated to a 35,000 square foot facility in Lowell off I-540 exit 81. Their new location has 1,200 square feet of retail space with more than 5,000 factory and handmade knives in inventory. The store is open to the public Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For a free catalog, visit www.agrussell.com or call 479-631-0130.
