During the weekend of August 15, 16 and 17, collectors and knife buyers from all over the United States and Canada attended the first A. G. Russell Knife Event. The over 95 knifemakers who had tables were so pleased with this first show that almost all of them had their reservations in for next year before they left Sunday afternoon as did most of the manufacturers.
The Event opened Friday evening with a reception/get together for the exhibitors and knife enthusiasts who came to see them. Many of A. G.'s friends were in attendance including longtime world renowned knifemaker greats Ron Lake from Oregon and D'Holder from Arizona, Barry Wood, now retired from Colorado, and Dan Dennehy, 89 year old maker of world famous Dan D knives, also from Colorado. Late into the evening this crowd of knifemakers and knife lovers renewed old friendships. Barry Wood had not been to a knife show in over 20 years and was mobbed until he had to leave the reception, exhausted; Dan Dennehy was much the same, enjoying the attention of friends he had not seen in years.
Several of the very best of today's top traditional folding knifemakers were displaying their knives along with the world's best known tactical knifemakers and world famous bowie knifemakers. Both stock removal makers and members of the American Bladesmith Society attended from all over the country. In addition to all the well known names in knifemaking, there was also a number of those just getting into knifemaking. A full listing of all of the exhibitors can be found at either http://knifeevent.com or http://agrussell.com/knifeevent.
Conspicuous by his absence was the great Robert W. Loveless who changed the design of the American hunting knife in the 1960s and thereafter. Bob and his longtime friends, A. G. Russell and Dan Dennehy, together founded the Knifemakers Guild almost 40 years ago. Now 79 years of age, Loveless says that he is no longer able to travel. To offset his absence, we put together a display of A. G.'s personal collection of 40 Loveless knives made over the past 50+ years. These knives had lots of attention from both makers and collectors alike.
Over 360 people attended a banquet Saturday evening honoring A. G.'s 75th birthday and his more than forty years of serving those who love knives, as well as those who make knives and the knife industry in general. Love and affection from hundreds of people who have known A. G. most of their lives filled the room and may have brought a tear or two.
If you were in attendance this year, please know that A. G., our staff and I appreciate your participation. We plan to see you next year. If you were unable to attend, we realize it was short notice, plan to join us for the next one. There will be a repeat of this event next year minus A. G.'s 75th birthday. The date has been set and the exhibit hall has been reserved. Be sure to reserve the weekend of July 24, 25 and 26, 2009. We look forward to seeing you in Rogers, Arkansas.
All the best,
Goldie Russell, President
