In 1973, I took the Knife Collector's Club™ knife production to Germany. For the CM-3, The Luger Pistol, I dealt with the Baron whose family had owned the Puma Cutlery Company for over 100 years. In the late 1970s, when I owned Bertram GmbR in Solingen, Germany, we produced a "knife-opener" made of nickel silver. In essence it was a pocketknife liner that was polished and trademarked, with one end dubbed off so that it would fit into a nail mark.

This one, the Ring Opener, was revived in 2006. It was originally designed for those who did not have strong fingernails. Just twist the ring and the blade opens or closes, no need to break your nails.
CSC-R219PAU $119.95
If you have ever broken a nail trying to open a strong springed knife or a difficult soda-pop can, then you know how helpful the proper tool for such a purpose can be. As I get older, I find that my once stout nails are becoming more and more like my hair, thin and fragile. Slipjoint knives, unless perfectly engineered and perfectly made, have become very difficult for me to open without an assist. Square tanged knives are very difficult without the proper tool.

The test consisted of cutting the edge bevel with a new file to test the hardness and then tapping the blade edge through a piece of wire of a known hardness to test the toughness. If the edge was not blunted by the wire, it passed the test and was marked with "File & Wire Tested".

The Hobo is a really old design. It actually began as an eating knife and a spike for lifting morsels, sheathed with a larger knife. The next step was to put a fork and a knife in a folder. Then they worked out methods of separating them. No one knows how long ago that was, only that it followed the invention of forks. I have seen really old ones with two tines. I have also seen them with spoons almost as big as ladles.
