The A.G. Russell One Hand Knife™ has been our best selling knife since the first ones were shipped in 1988. The handle, which is machined from a piece of solid stainless spring steel, works in conjunction with the blade to create an unusual locking system. This locking system, and the location of a thumb stud on both sides of the blade, allows the knife to be closed or opened one handed using either the right or left hand. That's why we call it the One Hand Knife™. While the knife measures only 3-7/8" closed, there is a full 3-1/8" of blade from the front of the handle to the tip of the blade and it measures nearly 7/8" wide at the kick. It is unusual to get this much blade in this size handle.
The original knife sold from 1988 to 2002 when our knifemaker had a hunting accident. We put those knives back in our catalog only last year when we began to complete knives from existing parts. Those parts (blade and handle) were made elsewhere and then completed in our own shop with the lock being fitted by hand. We have engineered out the expensive hand work in the lock resulting in our ability to offer higher quality blade steel for about the same price. The original knives had blades of first 440A and then AUS-8. We made a few with a wonderful Cowry Damascus that can only be compared to the ZDP-189 now available in this new American made version.
In 20 years this knife has become a Classic. I never go to a knife show that I do not have several people come up to me and show me the "One-Hand" knife they bought 15-20 years ago and still carry every day, often very worn but still very much in service. If your dad didn't buy one of these knives over the past 20 years, perhaps you should think seriously about buying one for him, as well as one for yourself. There are only a few hundred in this first batch. If you don't want to risk a wait for delivery, I suggest you order right away.
The CPM-154 blade is hardened to 59-61 Rc. and the ZDP-189 blade to 64-66 Rc. Measures 7" open and weighs approximately 2.5 oz. Except for the ZDP blade steel, these two are made in the U.S.A.
