The last time we were able to offer the A. G. Russell™ Cowry Damascus One-Hand Knife™ with handle scales was in the middle of 2003. The knives have sat in our warehouse with holes pre-drilled in the handles, but there was no one to shape the scales after our knifemaker’s hunting accident. The shop has been functioning for a while now. You will have noticed some of the knives coming out of that shop, like the Banovich Bowie introduced in January 2009, the Push Dagger Letter Openers which were on the front cover of the
A. G. Russell™ Summer Special catalog in mailboxes the first week of July, and the stag handled Drop Point Hunters that are on the front cover of the A. G. Russell™ Late Fall catalog in mailboxes the first week in September.
Cowry X Damascus is some of the finest blade steel I have seen. It is a laminated steel that was a forerunner of the laminated VG-10 damascus and laminated ZDP steels. The core is Cowry X at 66-68 Rc. sandwiched between layers of softer stainless steel. Cowry X should hold an edge at least 50% longer than ATS-34 with the best available heat-treat. We first introduced this knife with this blade steel in early 2000. While we are currently not able to purchase the material for new knives, we have approximately 140 of these blades in stock.
The handle, which is machined from solid stainless spring steel, works in conjunction with the blade to create an unusual locking system. This locking system and the location of a thumb stud on both sides of the blade, allows the knife to be closed, or opened, one handed using either the right hand or the left hand. After over twenty years of production, this knife is still unique. While it measures only 3-7/8" closed, there is a full 3-1/8" of blade from the front of the handle to the tip of the blade. The blade measures nearly 7/8" wide at the handle. Weighs approximately 2.4 oz.
