The Argentine Gaucho, the "cowboy" of the Pampas, is as important in the Argentine culture as the American cowboy is in our own. Typically, the Gaucho carried a Winchester rifle, a Smith & Wesson revolver and a "punal". The punal is the very model of a Spanish "dagger" of the 18th Century. Not a dagger at all, but what appears to be a French chef's knife with a thicker blade and often a handle and sheath of silver or nickel silver. For everyday wear, they often had antler handles and sheaths of leather. The Argentinean often eats with the punal, taking a firm grip on a large chunk of beef with his teeth and cutting it loose in front of his lips with a flourish. As they say, "don't try this at home". This Gaucho knife with a 4-7/8" blade might feel a little more comfortable to most of us than the knives with 8" or 10" blades.
Made by Böker® in Argentina, it is forged for the Argentine market. The handle material is 'European' antler from the Red Deer imported from Europe well over 100 years ago. The blade steel is 440A at 56-58 Rc. The brown leather sheath is made in the Gaucho style, no belt loop, but a flap or tab to hold the sheath above the belt or sash when slipped through it. Measures 9" tip to butt and weighs 3.4 oz.
