A.G. Russell Knives

In the late 1970s, when I owned Bertram GmbR in Solingen, Germany, we produced a "knife-opener" made of nickel silver. In essence it was a pocketknife liner that was polished and trademarked, with one end dubbed off so that it would fit into a nail mark.

If you have ever broken a nail trying to open a strong springed knife or a difficult soda-pop can, then you know how helpful the proper tool for such a purpose can be. As I get older, I find that my once stout nails are becoming more and more like my hair, thin and fragile. Slipjoint knives, unless perfectly engineered and perfectly made, have become very difficult for me to open without an assist. Square tanged knives are very difficult without the proper tool.

We have searched for years for a source of Chamois for our own use, in our store and at knife shows, and for our many customers who have asked where they could get it.

As a better match for the Cocobolo handles of our kitchen knives, we have constructed our wood knife block from poplar wood and added a black paint.

We have designed a block for our white handled kitchen knives in order to accommodate the length of the 10" blades. Works beautifully with other knives as well. Holds 6 kitchen knives and a set of 6 steak knives.

Based on the work of inventor Louis Graves, here is a compact sharpener that will do it all. Two diamond rods for establishing a new bevel and/or thinning a dull blade. Two ceramic rods of very high alumina content to put that razor sharp finished edge on the blade.

After about five years, we have revived the CIA Letter Opener. Designed in the mid-1970's, it was based on the A.G. Russell all steel Sting 1A and has been one of our most popular items of all time. This is the world's toughest letter opener.

The ceramic sharpener was invented by Louis Graves. We have always disagreed with Louis about the proper angle for the rods, but in every other way, he really knew what he was doing.

Thirty five years ago I discovered a small supply of pre-war nail clippers in the inventory of the Hen & Rooster factory. I had just bought the little company, and was disappointed to learn that the tooling for those remarkable clippers had been lost in the war and those remaining were the very last that existed.

Most folders that you purchase today do not include a quality pouch. We have had several requests over the years for a good-looking quality leather pouch sheath to accompany the quality folders that we sell. In 2007, we began offering a Japanese made model with a brass peg and leather strap closure. At about the same time we were offered a more traditional pouch, this one high quality handmade.

About 15 years ago, I bought a large quantity of knives from a distributor in Australia. Part of that stock was from a Japanese maker who had made really good knives but the leather pouches he furnished were even better than the knives.

"I have never had a pair of tweezers in my life that was worth a damn. Now I do and I appreciate it very much." Those words were spoken by General Norman Schwarzkopf about these little field tweezers.
