Mica Pearl, a unique resin based handle material, was developed to be an alternative to Celluloid. It is 100% stable, it will not burn or change color with age. Each color is developed in an atmospherically controlled environment, poured and controlled so each handle scale pattern is unique with a blend of black, gold and white.

The 3" Razor style blade makes this a "One Arm Knife", designed to be opened by hooking the front of the blade on a boot, shoe or pocket and snapping it open.

The Chuck Buck/A. G. Russell Signature knife will be limited to a total of 500 pieces of signed and serial numbered knives – 250 with Black Lip Pearl and 250 with India Stag.

Rope workers used this old pattern in the 19th Century for cutting rope against a sturdy surface. They would place the large blade against the rope and strike it with a club. This handsome knife is made just as it might have been in the early 1900s by Union Cutlery, Ka-Bar's predecessor. Each knife is serial numbered on the obverse side front bolster (Sorry, no choice of serial number).

The Cotton Knife is the 5th in the series. This pattern is a cousin of the pruning knife and was used by cotton buyers for cutting samples out of bales.

Böker® celebrates their 140th anniversary this year and they have much to celebrate. The company is one of the last production facilities left in Solingen, Germany, the "City of Blades". For those of us who love sporting knives, they are about the only one of major significance. Recently, Spyderco introduced a new line of folders they call SLIPITS. These are non-locking slip-joint knives from a company that has built a reputation on lockbacks, but also, more importantly, on quality. The Bug, not much larger than a bumble bee, is the first Spyderco® Slipit.

This is a very handy tool. During the Great Depression, knives of this type were commonly carried by men who were on the move, looking for work. These men were called Hobos and their common mode of transportation was a train boxcar. The A. G. Russell™ Boxcar Jack consists of a knife and fork that are held together by slots and pins in the liners and can easily be taken apart, resulting in a separate knife and fork.

Tony Bose has interpreted a very old pattern called the "Arkansas Hunter". A large folding hunter made as both a slipjoint and a lockback before the 1930s. This design, made by the W. R. Case® took the Blade Magazine 2008 Knife Collaboration of the Year® honors at the 2008 Blade Show held May 30-31 in Atlanta. This is the most recent pattern adapted by Tony and made by Case for those of us who love old-time knives, made really well.

Before the Rockwell tester, the File & Wire mark was used to indicate that the hardness and toughness of a blade had passed the file and wire test. The test consisted of cutting the edge bevel with a new file to test the hardness and then tapping the blade edge through a piece of wire of a known hardness to test the toughness. If the edge was not blunted by the wire, it passed the test and was marked with "File & Wire Tested".

The C. Platt's Sons Cutlery Acquisition Set includes a handsome English Rope Knife made very like it might have been in 1905. (This model may also be called an Elephant's Toe Nail or a Sun Fish.) The handle measures 1-1/16" wide with very flat dark antique jigged bone and flat bolsters.

Dan Burke says that he was inspired by an IXL exhibition knife of the early 1800s with an ivory handle. This handsome, larger than life knife measures 4-1/4" closed with a 3-1/8" clip blade, 2-1/4" sheepfoot blade and a 2-1/8" spey blade, all made of BG42 at 59-61 Rc.

The Hobo is a really old design. It actually began as an eating knife and a spike for lifting morsels, sheathed with a larger knife. The next step was to put a fork and a knife in a folder. Then they worked out methods of separating them. No one knows how long ago that was, only that it followed the invention of forks. I have seen really old ones with two tines. I have also seen them with spoons almost as big as ladles.

Ernst Felix, owner of Böker® says that the tree as Böker's trademark is as old as the company - 138 years. A real chestnut tree growing close to the plant gave Heinrich Böker the idea to choose this symbol for quality. In the company's first year, they were already shipping to Africa and South America where few could read the company's name.

In 1973, I took the Knife Collector's Club™ knife production to Germany. For the CM-3, The Luger Pistol, I dealt with the Baron whose family had owned the Puma Cutlery Company for over 100 years. They agreed to make 3,600 knives.
