One thing has always been consistent in the international knifemaking community, and that is a sense of brotherhood and the willingness to share and encourage other members.† One example of this is the friendship of Hawaiian knifemaker Ken Onion and Brazilian knifemaker Flavio Ikoma.† Ken has encouraged use of the Ikoma Korth ball bearing pivot system on his CRKT knives and also counseled Flavio on the directions some of his designs might take.
The Sampa, Flavio Ikomaís first folder designed for CRKT is a product of that friendship.† Ken suggested the general parameters of a "gentlemanís tactical" folder and Flavio did the rest.
The Sampa frames are cold-forged 6061-T6, which is machined, gray anodized for a titanium look, and then surface finished revealing a bright surface pattern, which aids grips.† The strip locking liner is 420J2 stainless steel inset into one frame.† Flavio developed the IKBS ball bearing system to be entirely raceless, the bearings running in channels machined into the blade and fame.† In this case, CRKT has incorporated a stainless steel race/bushing in the aluminum frames for long life.† A spring-loaded ball detent keeps the blade securely closed until needed.† Then a fast press of the flipper yields instant opening and lock-up.† A removable Teflon®-coated stainless clip is standard.
The 3-1/8" blade is premium AUS8 stainless steel at 58-59 Rc., with a drop point shape with recurve and a high hollow grind.† Available in two blade styles, a satin finish with a plain edge or a black titanium nitride blade coating with a combination edge.† Measures 4-1/4" closed and weighs 2.7 oz.† Suggested retail for the satin finish is $99.99 and for black coated $109.99.
