The best way to get Bob Dozier to do something is to challenge him. I wanted him to make highly polished knives for my customers who are reluctant to pay Bob Loveless the $4,000 plus that he now gets for his hunting knives. Dozier felt that his sheath making was weak so he went to the Loveless shop to see how Loveless did it. You have to understand the perfectionist nature here, there is no such thing as just "good enough". Bob has gone through at least six sewing machines, including one that he bought from Loveless himself. He now has a machine that suits him, has built a clicker to rough cut the leather and, not being able to find leather cutting knives that suited him, he has developed an entire line and is selling them to the top saddle makers in this country. His leather pouch sheaths are probably the finest in the marketplace and he keeps working to make them better.
Bob has agreed to produce ten Loveless style Drop Point Hunters with Interior Wooly Mammoth Ivory handle scales specifically for members of the Knife Collectors Club™ and A. G. Russell™ customers. He will make no more than a total of 12 in 2009. This will be the first knife Bob has produced for us using new blade steel. The new steel is Carpenter Steel’s CTS-40CP powder metal stainless at 59-60 Rc. Bob has found that it has fewer imperfections than the 154CM that he is currently able to buy. The blade is a 3-5/8" drop point. Many knifemakers mirror polish their blades, but you haven’t seen mirror polished until you take a look at this knife with this new blade steel. You will be challenged to find even the tiniest flaw in the finish. The handle is beautiful hand-selected interior Mammoth Ivory scales over a thin red liner with stainless bolts and thong hole liner and a full tapered tang. The hilt is 416 stainless. Measures 8" from tip to butt and weighs 5.9 oz. The sheath is hand made by Dozier and is of a quality to match the knife.
