The original Recon was the first knife developed and procured by SOG personnel in the Vietnam War. It was designed for SOG’s clandestine cross-border Recon team which experienced vicious, close-quarter combat. The original is very rare and collectors pay many hundreds of dollars each, when they can be found. SOG has taken this highly collectable classic design and updated with it with modern materials like stainless steel, rubber handles and black TiNi coating.

The Scuba/Demo is the rarest of the original Special Forces SOG knives. In fact, only one original is known to exist today. Only thirty-nine were made and thirty-eight of those were delivered to the Naval Advisory Detachment for missions on the North Vietnamese coastline. They were issued to OPLAN 34 ALPHA in 1964. Thirty-six were lost in operations and two were never seen again.

The SOG® Seal Knife 2000, now called the SEAL Team, has over the past several years evolved into an entire line of knives. SOG Specialty Knives was founded in 1986 by Spencer Frazer in his apartment in Santa Monica, California. The company's first and only product at that time was a fixed blade (the SOG S1) based on the original bowie knife produced during the Vietnam era by the counterinsurgency support office for the Studies and Observation Group. Years ago, I was visited by a young man from California who wanted to get into the knife business. He wanted to make a version of one of the SOG knives from the Vietnam war. I took his original and redesigned it, making the handle longer and changing a few lines to make it more attractive. I also gave him directions to the people in Japan who could make a first class knife for him.
