All who have known him for any length of time know that Bill Davis is an avid hunter. It was his passion for hunting that led him to knifemaking. Bill made his first knife in 1971 out of frustration with the number of times he had to sharpen his knife to skin a deer. Using a saw blade, he fashioned his own. That one worked so well, he found a demand from family and friends and was quickly a knifemaker. In 1973, he joined the Knifemakers Guild and became a full time knifemaker.
During the years between 1968 and 1973, I had met and talked with many handmade knifemakers. One of them was Bill. Because he lived only a few hours away, just south of Kansas City, Missouri, we were able to get together and work on knife concepts frequently. While never giving up his independence, Bill has been making knives for me for forty years. In all those years, this is the first time we have offered knives with the W. C. Davis mark. I’d say it’s about time.
