The name is not necessarily attractive, but what it lacks in elegance this knife delivers in usefulness. Custom knifemaker and metalworker Alan Folts really knows how to get the most into a small fixed blade design. The S.P.E.W. (Small Pocket Everyday Wharncliffe) is a slimmed down design for easy carry and all around blade utility.

The Shinbu™, designed by James Williams, is a specialized tool that is intended for military personnel and Special Forces operators. James developed this design to meet the specific requests from coalition forces overseas for a smaller version of the Hisshou™. The Shinbu comes into play when the soldier’s firearms cannot be used, as often happens in entry and search operations. It is designed for multiple carry options depending on the user’s need.

Ken developed this tool because there is a real need for it. After taking a large game animal it is a versatile tool for the heavy-duty tasks, with a gut hook, a fully curved Razor-Sharp skinning edge, and a handle that allows it to be used as a cleaver to separate pelvic bones, or even to quarter a large carcass in the field.

Fillet knives live a hard life. For that reason, many fishermen are reluctant to invest a lot of money in them. Recognizing these realities, CRKT asked fishing guide and knifemaker Russ Kommer to design a line of affordable fillet knives. Here they are, available in 3 sizes.

In 2010, Columbia River Knife & Tool and Ken Onion worked together to offer a Limited Edition of the Onion Skinner. Ken says he spent over five years on the design of this knife, making dozens of custom skinners, which he gave to Alaskan hunting guides in exchange for their feedback. As the responses came back, he modified the design and sent out more knives.

One of Russ Kommer's favorite custom knife sheath packages is the 2-Shot™. As a hunting guide, he has used it daily in the field in Alaska and around the world. Russ explains the sheath this way; "For me, a horizontal sheath makes getting around easier. It doesn't interfere with your rifle or backpack waist strap, and it's not always banging the bush plane, pickup, or fouling the packhorse guide rope. I've been making two-shell custom sheaths for years. I never carry a box of shells out of camp . . . usually just a magazine and the two cartridges in my sheath.

Columbia River Knife & Tool's® Keydashi, designed by Brazilian knife designer Flavio Ikoma, has traits rarely found in such a small knife, such as a deep wrap-around index finger groove, a reinforced notch at the thumb and a slight swell in the Zytel® handle scales. The locking sheath plate is also unusual. Let's face it, I've never seen another knife like it.

The Folts Minimalist with Wharncliffe blade, released by CRKT® in 2009, has proved to be so popular that they have just released two more blade styles including this more tactical version with a modified Tanto blade. Still a very small and lightweight knife.

The Folts Minimalist with a Bowie style blade, from Columbia River Knife & Tool®, was introduced at the beginning of 2010. This is still the same very small and lightweight knife as the original (with a Wharncliffe style blade) that was introduced at the beginning of 2009, just with a different blade style.

If you look at the web site of custom knifemaker Allen Elishewitz, you'll see that he is a wide-ranging designer, offering not only exquisite custom folders, but also timepieces and writing instruments. But Allen is also a serious martial artist, hence his interest in designing a superior fixed blade.

This is one of those knives that Goldie and I disagree on. I had to overrule and insist that there were quite a few of you who would love to have such a knife. Think of it as a short cutlass or combat bolo.

When Jon and Josh Graham of Graham Knives in Cleveland, Tennessee, developed their custom Graham Razel™ in 2001, most knife blades came to a single point. Not the Razel. It's a cross between a chisel and a razor with a knife handle. The result gives two useful Razor-Sharp™ edges, one for pushing or tapping, and the other for precise cutting. You also get two strong blade points. The Graham brothers have been very successful with their custom versions in a variety of sizes and styles.

Unlike many skeletonized flat blades, the Krein Dogfish is graceful, gives a secure grip, and also has that dogfish face at the pommel which turns out to be - a lanyard hole and bottle opener! It has a secure finger choil and friction grooves at the thumb spine and near the butt.

Russ Kommer, an Alaskan maker, designed a knife for his wife to carry in her purse. Every bush pilot, parachutist, and commercial fisherman who saw it wanted one and kept Russ with more work than he could finish. The answer to his problem was a joint venture with Columbia River Knife and Tool. This is a cutting tool that really gets into webbing, rope or netting. The blade comes either razor sharp or in an EMT style, with fully serrated edge and safety tip, just right for cutting away clothing from accident victims or cutting seat belts.

James Williams, the designer of the Hissatsu, is a former army officer and martial artist and current owner of Bugei Trading Company, a source of high quality Samurai swords.

CRKT has developed a line of knives specifically for emergency rescue. The knives are based on CRKT production models with brushed blade finished for tip corrosion resistance in wet environments and handle scales that are a highly visible orange Zytel®.

Both Triumph N.E.C.K.™ models are based on the same 1/8" thick blade of 3Cr13 stainless steel at 54-56 Rc. It is a full-tang skeletonized design, with a recurved grind on a 2-3/4" Tanto blade to aid cutting and a false top edge grind for penetrating. Overall length is 6-1/2".

The MAK-1™ (Multiple Access Knife) and Extrik-8-R™ (Seat Belt Cutter and Multi-Tool) were created by James McGowan, who is a professional firefighter in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
