In 1998, Kershaw introduced Ken Onion's Random Task folder with his SpeedSafe® assisted opening mechanism. That same year the Random Task won the Blade Show American Made Knife of the Year® award. The primary purpose for creating a blade in this manner is to allow the manufacturer to use a lesser quality steel for the spine and one of the more expensive high performance steels for the cutting edge.

It is a very interesting locking system that really functions as both a lock and a minimal assist to the Flipper opening. It opens using the ambidextrous Flipper system or the three thumbstuds on the blade. Use the thumbstuds for one hand opening and it works like any other non-assisted one hand opener.
