A.G. Russell Knives

No two Randall Made™ knives are exactly alike, for no jigs or patterns are used in their final construction. Large scale commercial production with this kind of attention to detail is not feasible and that's why knives of this unique quality are not widely available.

As a result of the popularity of those knives, we arranged for Gaétan to make a few knives featuring a close up view of tiger eyes and this one with a close up of leopard eyes, both on the obverse side of the black buffalo horn handle.

The Randall Model 25, with what has become known as the Model 25 handle made up of leather washers and usually India Stag, is possibly the most beautiful knife Randall makes. For several years, this knife has been made with a handle of Leather and Maple Burl, dyed to our color specifications, exclusively for A. G. Russell™ Knives.

The Catskill Mountains, an area in New York State, were once the Indian’s summer hunting grounds because there was so much wildlife. They called the mountains "Onteora", which means land in the sky. Today, wildlife is still in abundance and many sportsmen return to the mountains year after year to shoot their favorite game.

During the A. G. Russell™ Knife Event at the end July, we arranged for him to complete a few knives featuring a tight close up of a Tiger's Eyes. The image appears only on the mark side of the handle. The other side is highly polished black water buffalo horn. Very stunning.

In 2009, commercial hunting guide and knifemaker Russ Kommer made a limited edition of fifty of his drop point hunter for Browning. The fifty knives were handmade by Russ in his own shop, with premium exhibition grade Desert Ironwood and shipped in a walnut display box.

New for 2011 Ka-Bar has released a new series of knives, their ZK knives or "Zombie Killer" knives. Ka-Bar named the line after its top officials joked about the need to design knives capable of killing a zombie when firearms aren't available.

The Keith Murr Model 88 is a handy little drop point hunter with a 3-3/4" blade of D2 at 60-61 Rc. Keith uses D2 almost exclusively, a habit he picked up when he worked for Bob Dozier. The other feature that he picked up from Dozier is the straight forward practicality of his knives. His focus is to create a handmade knife that is meant to be used.

The Rock Creek Springbok is a utility knife with a drop point style blade. Each knife is forged from a high-alloy steel (HWS-1K), a Hanwei proprietary steel with an edge hardness of 58-60 Rc., excellent corrosion resistance, edge holding and ease of sharpening.

We have been selling knives from Boker's factory in Argentina for several years. Those knives have always been of a great quality at a great price. This drop point hunter is no exception to that level of quality with several upgraded features.

Harry Archer designed the first Chute Knife for Bob Loveless in the early 1970s. The original, larger version has been copied by many, many knifemakers over the years. This is the first time I have seen one made this small. German knifemaker Dietmar Kressler has been an attentive Loveless student and the influence is obvious.

The Roper® Ozark Hunter is a traditional style using knife that is also interesting as a showpiece.

This model was designed by Daniel for the Dozier Arkansas Made line, which is basically for those with Kydex® sheaths.

All who have known him for any length of time know that Bill Davis is an avid hunter. It was his passion for hunting that led him to knifemaking. Bill made his first knife in 1971 out of frustration with the number of times he had to sharpen his knife to skin a deer.

The way we are handling the A. G. Russell™ San Mai Drop Point Hunter reminds me of the Morseth® knives we made during the 1990s. There were only about ten models, but the variation in handle materials allowed us to create a wide variety of knives.

The Shiva was the first tactical fixed blade to be made by Al Mar® Knives with a laminated, VG-10 stainless steel blade. Laminating the VG-10 between two layers of 400 series stainless steel increases the lateral strength of the blade by upwards of 30% and does so without increasing the weight or bulk.

I designed the A. G. Russell™ San Mai Drop Point Hunter to allow a wide variety different handle materials in very small quantities which we add here in our shop.

The Model 28 Woodsman with Border Patrol Handle is a knife that was introduced by the Randall Shop early in 2010.

The Aura line was built on traditional ideas and evolved those ideas for the future. SOG considered weight, ease of carry, safety and intuitiveness. Studying the original bowie, they considered utility, ergonomics and comfort when designing this line.

The design is almost 40 years old, the steel is almost brand new and the skill needed to produce such a fantastic knife has been developed over the past 50+ years.

When Gerber introduced their Gator Folder Line in 1991, they were named the "Most Innovative Knife of the Year." These knives are still as popular as they were when first introduced. The Gator Fixed Blade employs the same advanced thermoplastics with an alligator skin texture that delivers a reliable and ultimately comfortable grip.

Designed by American knifemaker Jerry Lairson, this knife is a beefy yet compact hunting and outdoor knife. The additional finger choil allows various grip positions, with maximum control for delicate cutting tasks. Notches on the blade spine provide positive control.

The Boker Arbolito Nicker is based on the traditional Bavarian utility knife of the same name. A slim knife, it traditionally included an unobtrusive leather sheath allowing it to be carried in a special pocket in a man's lederhosen where it was easily reached when needed.

This Arkansas Made Dozier Classic results from Bob Dozier's years of making the narrow tang Morseth knives. While the design is based on those developed by Bob over his many years of producing narrow tang knives, this one was conceived by Daniel Crotts and is being produced in the Arkansas Made shop, which he is now managing.

The Randall Model 25, with what has become known as the Model 25 handle, made up of leather washers and usually India Stag, is possibly the most beautiful knife Randall makes. For several years, we had them make this knife with a handle of Leather and our own Maple Burl, which we had dyed to our color specifications. This made a very striking knife. We are currently unable to get that special color in Maple Burl, so we have ordered Randall's version with Desert Ironwood.

Gaétan Beauchamp is extremely talented and is one of the most popular knifemakers to be featured in the A.G. Russell™ and Cutting Edge® catalogs. He sold his first knife in 1992 and we first featured his knives in 2001. He is not only a highly technically skilled artist, but an extremely creative one as well. His specialty is unusual and rare handle material on well-made, dependable and attractive knives.

While there are many different handle materials available, we have chosen three different ones (Ebony, Giraffe Bone and Red Ivory), each with mosaic pins of stainless and copper to complement the color of the handle scales. The ebony is an exotic wood from Mozambique, the pink ivory is a dense wood from South Africa with a naturally occurring pink color and the Giraffe Bone is in its natural color. It has been stabilized but not dyed.

The 3-5/8" drop point blade is the same steel used in the Mammoth Ivory version - Carpenter Steel's CTS-40CP powder metal stainless at 59-60 Rc. Bob has found that it has fewer imperfections that the 154CM that he is currently able to buy.

Bob recently made a very limited production of thirty Slim Drop Point Hunters with Green Canvas Micarta® inspired by the drop point hunter made by R. W. Loveless since the 1960s. To create this Slim Drop Point, Bob has taken his Loveless inspired drop point hunter and reduced the blade width to 7/8" while keeping all other measurements the same as the full width original.

Our good friend, commercial hunting guide and knifemaker Russ Kommer has recently teamed up with Browning® to produce a limited edition series of hunting knives representing each of the four Full Curl Sheep. The designs are all Kommer; the manufacture is by Browning. As a part of that collaboration, Russ is making a limited edition of fifty of his drop point hunter for Browning.

The term San Mai comes from Japan and simply means "three layers". The San Mai steels that began appearing in the American knife market the past few years have all come from Japan. Laminated steels, such as San Mai, were developed to allow a very hard center core for the best cutting and edge holding and a blade that is tough enough to not snap under normal pressure. The soft sides support the hard core and add strength.

To create this Slim Drop Point, Dozier has taken the original drop point design and reduced the width to 7/8" while keeping all other measurements the same as the original 3-3/4" drop point.

I have been drawing pictures of knives for all of seventy years, but it was not until the late 1960s when Robert W. (Bob) Loveless, the World's premier designer of hunting and combat knives, taught me how he developed a knife design that I began to design instead of just drawing pictures.

Each set combines a hunters two most important field tools, a razor sharp skinning knife with an aggressive wood/bone saw all in a compact belt sheath. Stainless steel AUS-8 blades are precision ground shaving sharp to ensure superior edge retention and ease of sharpening.

The original Gut Hook has been very popular with hunters because it solved a problem: it made dressing large game much easier. David Bloch, owner and founder of Outdoor Edge, has taken the gut hook concept and improved it. Instead of a hook design with a sharp point, the gutting blade has a blunted end with a sharp blade that curves inward.

Queen® Cutlery dates back to 1890 and is known for quality knives that continue to be produced using many of the same hand processes used many years ago. Over the years, you have seen their folders on the pages of our catalog, but no Queen fixed blades.

The Companion features a 5-1/8" flat ground drop point blade of 1/4" 1095 Cro-Van steel at 56-68 Rc., black coated.

Bob Dozier has been collecting the choicest of handle material all the 30 years I have known him. In the last couple of years he has found some of the most highly figured cocobolo I have ever seen. Of course, Bob also knows how to cut the wood to get the best effect. The result is some of the most magnificent cocobolo handles you will find on a knife.

One of Kershaw's most popular hunting knives is now available in safety orange. The Antelope Hunter II Orange features a robust, 3-5/8" drop-point skinning blade of tough AUS8A stainless steel at 57-59 Rc.

Wayne Hendrix is a maker of very fine hunting knives. In addition to being a knifemaker, he is also a hunting guide, and his knife designs reflect the understanding of what makes a good solid working knife, gained from that experience. The Model 32 Hunter is built to function well and to hold up to hard use.

Keith Murr is a Northwest Arkansas maker who worked for a period of time in Bob Dozier's shop.

The Karambit is a personal utility knife from Samatra or Java. It is most often seen with a hooked "Tiger Claw" slashing style blade, but Fox Cutlery from Manigo, Italy has recently introduced a hunter version.

The Leo IV was Boker's® first fixed blade knife to use Damascus blade steel forged from the barrel of the famous German battletank, Leopard. Boker's® Damascus forger combineed three different steels (carbon tool steels and ball-bearing steel) with the Leopard's gun barrel steel to create a completely unique blade material.

This small 1830s to 1840s style Bowie Knife from Wrangler® has handle scales of Curly Maple and a drop point blade with file worked back and Spanish notch. Like knives made during those years in this country, the blade is thin (about 1/16"), making the knife both lightweight and a good choice for slicing.

For some time, I have felt the need for a simple hunting knife made of a high quality blade steel but at a price that is affordable to most. We have been working on the design and production of this model for well over a year.

Only a few years ago Tinus, a teacher of Afrikaans and other subjects at an English School in South Africa, had never seen a handmade knife. His world changed when a friend showed him a knife that the friend had made. Tinus describes it as being rough indeed, but it inspired him to attempt his own. His knives improved for several years, but it was not until Tinus began selling outside South Africa that knifemaking became profitable.

Series consists of two fixed blade hunters, each with a different blade pattern. Features 440C stainless steel blades and anodized aluminum handles with 3M non-slip inserts.

We offer this hunter in two styles, a drop point blade and a gut-hook. The gut-hook was invented by Sid Bell, "The Alaskan Silversmith," who took his whittled model to Alaskan knifemaker Merle Seguine about 40 years ago. Buck's gut-hook is a somewhat different pattern and has been patented and trademarked. The "Zipper" has a near square shape and should be easier to sharpen, it also should cut hides of almost any thickness.

The Vanguard is Buck's answer to the Loveless Drop Point and all the variations sweeping the world of handmade knives.

Most knife people know Bob Dozier as a great knifemaker, but few know him for the open hearted and generous person that he is. He told me of a remarkable knifemaker in Carolina who made great knives which were really under priced.

Bob Dozier has taken on the challenge of making the ultimate Loveless designed drop point which we will sell for about one-third or one-fourth the current market price of a genuine Loveless hunting knife.

The Dozier Buffalo River Hunter was introduced late in 2005. It is a drop point hunter that was designed for A. G. Russell customers. At the time it was introduced, Desert Ironwood was plentiful. It is a wonderful handle material, but has become increasingly hard to find forcing Bob to look for other suitable handle material. He has found a source of Cocobolo that has as much striking contrast in grain, perhaps more, as the finest Desert Ironwood. Buffalo Hunters are now available with Cocolobo and Green Linen Micarta®. Like all of Bob's standard hollow ground hunting knives, these are hand ground in Bob's shop on grinders designed and built by him.

The Randall shop remains so busy that it normally takes four years to get a knife directly from them. For anyone wanting to order directly from Randall the price will be lower but the wait will be extremely long. No two Randall Made™ knives are exactly alike, for no jigs or patterns are used in their final construction.
