The term San Mai comes from Japan and simply means "three layers". The San Mai steels that began appearing in the American knife market the past few years have all come from Japan. Laminated steels, such as San Mai, were developed to allow a very hard center core for the best cutting and edge holding and a blade that is tough enough to not snap under normal pressure. The soft sides support the hard core and add strength.

We offer this hunter in two styles, a drop point blade and a gut-hook. The gut-hook was invented by Sid Bell, "The Alaskan Silversmith," who took his whittled model to Alaskan knifemaker Merle Seguine about 40 years ago. Buck's gut-hook is a somewhat different pattern and has been patented and trademarked. The "Zipper" has a near square shape and should be easier to sharpen, it also should cut hides of almost any thickness.
