About 20 years ago two polite young men from California came into my office in Springdale, Arkansas and asked me about the knife business. They wanted to become designers and importer/manufactures of knives. Their idea was to begin with a reproduction of the Vietnam era bowie created by the Studies and Observation Group, an elite joint services military group designed for covert operations in Vietnam. They took their company name from the acronym for that elite group - SOG Specialty Knives.
I modified the design slightly to give the knife a handle of proper length and a better appearance and gave them my contact in the knife industry in Seki City, Japan. They went to the finest maker of fixed blade knives and together they produced the finest fixed blade that has come out of Japan. Tempered like a 200 year old Japanese sword with a hard skin and the core soft, this blade held a super edge yet was extremely stout. They did not powder coat that blade, but blued it, as well as the hilt and butt, like a fine gun.
To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of their original bowie on which the company was launched, SOG has introduced a limited edition serial numbered bowie marked 20th Anniversary on the back of the blade. The knife has a zone tempered 6-3/8" blade of 1/4" thick SK-5 high carbon steel at 57-59 Rc. with a softer inner core for great strength. You will have to handle this knife to see how superb grinding can be. The hilt and butt are also carbon steel and all steel parts are blued like a fine gun. The handle is compressed leather. Overall length is 11-1/4" weight is 12.7 oz. Includes a walnut presentation box. Suggested retail is $450.00.
