You may recognize the name of the designer, or the short stubby blade in Spyderco's new Lava. Chad Los Banos is beginning to be recognized as a designer of small unique knives. Remember the Böker® Sub Com. I called it Böker's sturdy little knife.
Chad is a corrections officer and has very specific ideas about what a knife blade should be and do. In direct opposition to what you usually see in a self-defense knife, you will not find a big heavy blade in either the Böker Sub Coms (either the folder - BO-589 or the fixed blade - BO-012) or this new Spyderco LAVA.
The LAVA has a a fairly normal sized handle that curves to conform to the hand, large or small, and a very short blade that is positioned at just the correct angle to allow better leverage and less fatigue to the hand and arm. Once you have used the knife you will recognize just how much thought Chad Los Banos puts into the function of the knives he designs.
The 1-7/8" blade of VG-10 at 60-62 Rc. is fitted into a Spyderco style stainless steel handle. Features a removable clip that will function on either side of the knife for tip-up carry. Measures 3-7/16" closed and weighs 3.3 oz. Made in Japan. Suggested retail price is $139.95.
