Originally a stone-headed hatchet, the steel-headed tomahawk arrived with the French fur trappers as trade goods and quickly became a prized possession of the American Indian. Many designs were in use, varying from the simple hatchet to the elaborately decorated multi-use pieces. The most recognizable is the Pipe Hawk which combined an effective tool or weapon with a means of indulging the Indian's love of tobacco.

Today, you have a choice. If you want to own a fine Pipe Hawk, you pay an enormous price to a skilled smith who forges each piece.

Or, you can pay about a hundred dollars for one of these great, working pieces made in China. The head is forged of a better steel than was available during the days of the Indian trade. There is even a reamer for clearing the path the smoke travels, it fits into the top of the head. Walnut handle. I think it is wonderful that a Hawk of this quality is available today. Perfect for re-enactors. Weighs 12 oz. and measures 18-1/2".
