When I bought the tiny Hen & Rooster firm in 1975, among the many things I found was a coffin shaped handle. This knife had not been made in years and was bladed in a way odd to an American eye. It had a large blade at the small end and a small blade at the large end. In my mind I saw a bold saber ground blade with a strongly cut swedge and a long pull as a single blade knife. I found the people who made tooling for embossed advertising knives. Finding that I could get them to soar above their regular work, I encouraged them into this masterpiece of embossed knife handle tooling. The American Eagle clutching the shield with the stars and stripes was conceived by me and executed by the well known and talented scrimshander, Bill Shotts.
In 1976, to commemorate the American Bicentennial, we made 28 knives with 14kt Gold, 1,000 with Sterling Silver, 2,000 with Brass and 3,000 with Stainless Steel handles. Of those, we still have a few on our shelves. 2-3/4" blade of German Stainless at 57-59 Rc. Measures 3-3/4" closed and weighs 2.9 oz.
This is a true collectible! It was the most successful of all the commemorative knives we produced.
