In 1926, the U. S. Mint issued a special edition of half dollar coins commemorating the Oregon Trail. Only 264,419 coins were struck. The coins were issued to the Oregon Trail Memorial Association, which sold them to raise funds for trail markers. Walking Liberty Half Dollars were minted from 1916 to 1947. The reverse side of the coin featured a perched Bald Eagle.
