Thirty years ago, Paul Poehlmann developed the Axial locking knife, since called the "Paul®" knife. In the 1970s Gerber produced the knife and I sold thousands. Those $40 knives are now selling for $200 and more. Gerber ended production in 1986.
In 1995 or 1996, Jim Wehrs, the president of Gerber asked if we thought another, larger Paul® knife could be successful. My answer was simple, "we will take the first 2,000". Indeed, we did get that first 2,000 and when in 1997 Gerber decided to discontinue them, we also bought the last 1,000 produced. Then from parts left over had a few hundred A. G. Russell Paul® knives produced.
All of the fascination with the first Paul® knives was in the remarkable Axial lock. The shape of the knife did not become of much interest until Poehlmann arranged an exclusive contract with the Lone Wolf knife company.
This new company, made up of former executives from Gerber is issuing new and interesting knives with the Axial lock. This Presto is one of them.
The Presto is pocket size, 3-1/2" closed with a 2-3/8" blade of 19C27 at 60-62 Rc. The liners are stainless steel as are all internal parts. There are two handle materials available, one is a handsome burl and the other is good looking Ivory Micarta®. Suggested retail $149.99.
