When I first saw one of these knives, I could not figure out what on earth the handle and sheath were made of. Once I was told, I could see that the handles were easy, just cut the right size and shape sapling. But the rectangular sheath? The young Japanese makers explained that they take the bark of the cherry tree and soften it until they can cover the wooden handle and sheath with an almost undetectable joint. The color and depth of the cherry bark is beautiful and it seems practical as well.
These knives are razor sharp, please be careful when you handle them. The blade is a very useful 4-7/8" drop point of Hitachi White Steel at 59-61 Rc. This is a very tough tool steel, widely used in Japan for the highest quality woodworkers cutting tools.
You can put this knife into your collection or take it to the woods. Measures 9-1/2" overall and weighs 5.8 oz. Total weight with sheath is 8.4 oz.
